Kenna James, a teen student, has been chronically absent from school this year. Just as she thinks she's free to skip today, she discovers her stepmom Alexis Fawx on the sofa next to school counselor Ms. Maverick (Brett Rossi). Alexis is curious as to why Kenna isn't at school. Kenna pretends to be ill, but no one believes her. They aren't going away until they figure out why a bright girl with a bright future is missing school and getting bad grades. Ms. Maverick inquires about Kenna's relationship with her mother. Kenna claims Alexis is her stepmother, but Alexis, who changed Kenna's diapers and witnessed her first steps, is offended. Ms. Maverick believes she understands Kenna's issue.
