When her step sister Janice enters the room with the intention of having some fun, August Ames is studying math on her bed. Janice is informed by August, who is a good girl, that she needs to study. August takes a pause to write in her diary. She says she's really happy to have Janice as a sister, but she also acknowledges that sometimes it seems like Murphy's Law because of the way their personalities clash. August's sister's new acquaintance Carmen is a detrimental influence on Janice, but she is powerless to stop it other than to be a good person and be true to herself. Since Janice Griffith and August's parents are away for the weekend, Carmen Caliente arrives at their home prepared to party.
